Selecting the Surface Foundation
The most important decision in building your pickleball court. The right surface affects every aspect of the game — from ball bounce and foot traction to long-term durability.
Surface selection is probably the most important decision you'll make when building your pickleball court. The surface impacts every aspect of the game — from ball bounce and foot traction to long-term durability and maintenance needs. At Backyard Pickleball Builders, we'll walk you through the pros and cons of each option so you can make the right choice for your budget, climate, and play style.
Your main surface options include:
- Basic concrete
- Post-tension concrete
- Rebar-enforced concrete
- Asphalt
While modular court tiles and asphalt may seem like quick or low-cost solutions, they lead to inconsistent bounces, slippery footing, and costly repairs. As any professional player will tell you, these surfaces aren't for playing real pickleball. It would feel like playing basketball on a grass field.
Almost all of our courts are built with reinforced concrete of some kind. For the ultimate in performance and longevity, we recommend post-tension concrete. Its steel cable reinforcement minimizes cracking, provides a consistently flat surface, and pairs perfectly with acrylic paint surfacing.
Selecting the right surface from the start will protect your investment and ensure years of enjoyable play. Backyard Pickleball Builders will help you choose the surface that's built to last — and built for your game.
